The Best Ways to Learn About Senior Living

After attending a luncheon and several other events at Oak Crest, Maryella Alwine decided to move to the Parkville, Md., community

Maryella Alwine and her late husband Dean were perfectly content living in their Bel Air, Md., townhouse. However, her curiosity about senior living was piqued when she was invited to a lunch at Oak Crest, an Erickson Senior Living community in Parkville, Md.

"Our neighbor was considering moving and asked if I wanted to come along," Maryella recalls. "So, I thought, 'Why not,' and came to take a look. The luncheon was lovely and informative."

From informational luncheons to personalized appointments and group tours, prospective residents can explore Oak Crest at their own pace--with no added pressure.

Those interested in learning more about Oak Crest are welcome to schedule an appointment with a sales team member or attend an introductory event.

"We'll meet with you one-on-one to answer your important questions about our on-site health care services, financial structure, and the many amenities and services Oak Crest offers," Boyd explains. "It's also a wonderful opportunity for us to learn more about you, so that we can tailor the experience to your personal goals, interests, timeline, and preferences."

Oak Crest's informational luncheons and other events provide a relaxed environment for attendees to experience the community in a group setting. Guests tour amenities and a variety of floor plans, enjoy a delicious meal prepared by the dining team, and mingle with current residents.

"Our luncheons are a great way to get started as you conduct your research," says Boyd.

Maryella attended several of these events. "The events are great! I always encourage people to visit the campus in person," she notes.

Priority List perks

"[The luncheon] got me thinking about our situation, and we decided to join the Priority List," says Maryella, which helped her explore the community further.

In addition to saving their spot in line for a future residence, Priority List members receive invitations to exclusive events, updates on community happenings, and planning and moving support.

Another Priority List perk, the Live the Life program, allows members to test-drive the community's vibrant lifestyle. Guests can stay overnight in a beautifully appointed guest suite, utilize amenities, join club meetings, dine at on-campus restaurants, and chat with current residents.

"We customize your itinerary based on what you want to achieve during your stay," says Boyd. "For some people, that means exploring activities and clubs. Others simply want to walk around the campus and observe daily life."

She continues, "You'll have the opportunity to connect with residents and learn about their personal experiences and moving journeys. They often offer their insights and advice, helping you to make the best decisions."

Don't wait!

Boyd encourages anyone interested in Oak Crest to reach out and take advantage of the educational opportunities available to them, regardless of when they plan to move.

"It's never too early to start the conversation. You don't have to wait until you are ready to move to meet with us or visit campus," says Boyd. "We understand that visiting the community can be a big step when researching your future and considering a move. But, to best serve you, we want to learn about your specific needs and priorities. The sooner, the better!"

She adds, "We are here to educate you on your options, provide resources, and answer your questions. We are here to help and support you, every step of the way."

"And I never felt pressured," notes Maryella, reflecting on her journey to Oak Crest.

Loving life

All her research paid off for Maryella, as she's now enjoying a vibrant lifestyle in the perfect community.

Since moving to Oak Crest, she's joined on-site classes, participated in a book club, volunteered in the campus library, served on the concert committee, and spread joy to neighbors as a "birthday fairy."

"I think it's safe to say that I'm thriving living here!" says Maryella. "I tell people to move sooner rather than later, so they can take advantage of all the wonderful activities here on campus."
