Officals Celebrate Opening Of New Parkville Computer Store

The newest retailer in Perring Plaza celebrated its recent opening with a ribbon cutting on Monday morning.

Micro Center, a national computer and electronics retailer, opened its doors to customers from around the Baltimore metropolitan area last month; but on Monday they held a ribbon cutting ceremony attended by local officals.

Fifth District Councilman David Marks, Sen. Kathy Klausmeier, and state Delegates John Cluster, Joe Boteler and Sue Aumann helped cut the ribbon and presented resolutions to the retailer which, according to Marks, will employ around 200 people.

Back in September Ed Lukens, a Micro Center spokesman, said the company was excited to open its second store in Maryland. The chain operates 24 shops nationwide—including a store in Rockville and one in Northern Virginia.

"I have been in contact with Micro Center since this spring and am very exciting about this new store, which is like a Home Depot for computer enthusiasts,"  Marks wrote in an email. "Its proximity to the Beltway, Perring Parkway, and institutions like Towson University is perfect."

The shop, which deals in both Apple and PC products, has a large build-your-own-PC department, "Knowledge Bars" where customers can go for product support and "Knowledge Theaters" where free clinics are held on the weekends.

"Many of our customers remark how Micro Center is like a brick & mortar version of Newegg or TigerDirect," Lukens said.

When the store's imminent opening was announced back in September, commenter Bryan Hoyt expressed his excitement.

"I have shopped at the NoVa location for almost 20 years and more recently at Rockville one and found prices often very competitive to online retailers. Their prices are good on computer parts like RAM, CPU and HD," he wrote. "Often they have sales to help prices. I am just happy to have alternative to Best Buy and Baynesville for same day purchases when I need them."
