Israel's Former Chief Rabbi To Visit Girls School

Bnos Yisroel, a Jewish girls school, celebrates its new facility June 3 with a dedication and a visit from the chief rabbi of Tel Aviv and former chief rabbi of Israel.

Rabbi Israel Meir Lau, who is also a Holocaust survivor and author, will be the guest of honor at the event, set for 7:15 p.m. at the school, 6300 Park Heights Ave., according to a news release from The Associated.

Meir Lau is author of "Out of the Depths: The Story of a Child of Buchenwald Who Returned Home at Last," a popular read throughout the Pikesville and Baltimore area.

Rabbi Chaim Amster, director of development for Bnos Yisroel, an Orthodox Jewish day school, said Lau will speak about his life during the event.

"Everybody could—and should—consider coming, and they are encouraged to come," Amster said. "It is a tremendous opportunity to hear form someone who has experienced life like no one else. He is someone who started from the depths, losing most of his family in the Holocaust, to become a dignitary who has really made a difference in the world."

The event is open to adults. Admission is free of charge and there will be a complimentary dessert reception following the event, Amster said.

Bnos Yisroel opened Sept. 6 in its new location, which is the former school and Har Sinai Congregation, Amster said.

Therefore, the school is "new to us," he said.

"We worked very hard to arrange for Rabbi Lau to come in" for the facility dedication celebration, he said.

The 12-year-old school has 430 students. "Our goal is to recognize, appreciate and develop each student's unique potential and promote academic success, a love of Judaism and positive self-image," Amster said, citing the school's official goal.

"We really know each student and we do everything we can to help each student succed," he said. "You feel it."

The dedication is a chance for the community to get to know the school, he explained.
