Hurricane Irene: Potomac Outages and Damages

Update Aug. 28, 9:05 a.m.: A tropical storm warning remains in effect for the Montgomery County area through the morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Today's forecast: Tropical storm conditions possible with rain expected before 10 a.m. Northwest winds will reach 24 to 29 miles per hour, with gusts as high as 44 miles per hour. Today's high will reach the low 80s.

Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 56. Northwest wind between 6 and 9 mph. 

Update Aug. 28, 8:55 a.m.: Montgomery County Police: Incident reports to the Potomac area deal mostly with down trees, no major property damage reported yet.

Update Aug. 28, 8:09 a.m.: Montgomery County Department of Transportation is reporting the following traffic light outages that might affect travel around the area:

  • Old Georgetown Rd. (MD.187) and Lincoln St.
  • Rockville Pike. (MD.355) and Battery La
  • Rockville Pike. (MD 355) and Pooks Hill Rd.
  • Rockville Pike. (Md 355) and Alta Vista Rd.
  • Rockville Pike. (MD 355) and North Dr.
  • Rockville Pike. (MD 355) and Wilson Dr
  • Rockville Pike. (MD 355) and Cedar Lane.
  • Olney-Sandy Spring Rd. (MD.108) and New Hampshire Ave. (MD.650)
  • Olney-Sandy Spring Rd. (MD.108) and Norwood Rd.
  • Olney-Sandy Spring Rd. (MD.108) and Dr. Bird Rd.
  • Olney-Sandy Spring Rd. (MD.108) and Old Vic Blvd.
  • Olney-Sandy Spring Rd. (MD.108) and Sherwood High School Drwy
  • Olney-Laytonsville Rd. (MD.108) and Brink Rd.

We also saw the following traffic light outages along Falls Road (MD.189)

  • Falls Chapel Way
  • Montrose Road.

Update Aug. 28, 7:45 a.m.: Pepco reports that 3,120 Potomac customers are without power in zip code 20854, with several more outages in zip code 20859. Nearly 66,700 customers are without power in all of Montgomery County.

Update Aug. 28, 12:30 a.m.: Pepco reports that most of the outages in Potomac have been addressed, fewer than five remaining.

Update 11:30 p.m.: Pepco reports that approximately 252 Potomac customers are experiencing power outages at this time. The following traffic lights on MD. 182 are not operating due to downed Pepco wires: Layhill Road, Ednor Road and Norwood Road.
