Week in Review: End of a Hurricane, Beginning of School
Here's a look at the top news from Aug. 29 to Sept. 4.
After last week’s major events, an earthquake and a hurricane, Potomac has slowly edged back to business as usual. The end of Irene made for some coverage about storm damage around Montgomery County, with one Potomac resident making the point that it could have been worse.
After the excitement of the storm died down, we remembered it was back-to-school for Potomac students. Bells Mill Elementary, Cabin John Middle and Winston Churchill High provided a lot of interesting back-to-school stories, from a photo gallery about the first day back, to an open house of a new school building, to sporting aspirations of our talented Potomac players.
Education remained a theme for the week, with our series of videos interviewing Superintendent Joshua Starr. Each of the five segments detailed Starr’s educational philosophy and his views on topics ranging from funding education to the achievement gap.
Midweek the focus turned to art and business, as we profiled several area artists and gallery shows, and a young community business man. Churchill High School student Jack Reese has a little more to juggle than the average high school junior. Reese is the founder and owner of Chocolate Lizard, a Potomac-based business that creates tie-dye T-shirts. Not only has Reese founded his own business, he donates part of his proceeds to the “Wacky Wednesday” cart at Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville, Ky.
This weekend we get ready for Labor Day. Be on the look out for photos of weekend festivities and please submit your own stories and pictures to Potomac Patch. You can email them to katie.griffith@patch.com
