A Week in Review: State Fair, Closed Business, Back-to-School

A look at the most notable events for Aug. 23 to Aug. 29.

This week was dominated by school news, as Monday was the first day back for the county's public school children.

The morning commute was a little longer, since everyone was stopping for school buses and crossing guards, but since many of the county's kids walk to school, safety is important.

We met the new principal at Parkdale High School, Cheryl Logan. Logan isn't new to the area, but she's new to the job - and seems to be handling the change well. She seems to have a bond with students already and it's only the first week.

Columnist Sylvia Kane told us about her vacation to the Jersey shore and her attempt to create perfect memories for her children, realizing later that great memories create themselves.

We sadly learned that a sandwich shop off Route 1, is closing its doors at the end of the month. Apparently they had a lunch following since their sandwiches were huge, tasty and affordable.

The Maryland State Fair began Friday and Patch will be there daily. I'll be there Tuesday evening and Friday evening, so come by and visit me! I'm looking forward the fair food and rides and I'm looking to find something unique to eat. I wonder what they are frying this year?

For those who love sustainable food, there's a urban farm, just beyond the borders of Riverdale Park, in Edmonston. There the farm managers are finding innovative ways to grow produce and maintain a farm.

Columnist Bruce Wernek told us about his business trip to New Mexico and his discoveries in the desert. It's definitely somewhere I'd love to visit, especially because I've seen black sand beaches in Mexico and would love to see the contrast.

We looked into the winter bowling league at Rinaldi and spent some time with the girls soccer team at Northwestern High School.

We're looking forward to next week when the Riverdale Park Town Council will meet and to several schools having their back-to-school nights.
