Editor's Picks for Labor Day Weekend

An assortment of activities around the county and in the district welcome local residents.

The last official weekend of the summer has arrived – Labor Day Weekend, so find that summery outfit and find a place to spend great moments with family.

For those headed to the shore, Hurricane Earl is headed to the east coast beaches and although the sun will be out, high winds may cause rip tides and tall waves. Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley has declared a state of emergency in Maryland and lifeguards are asking that people only go into the water knee deep. The storm will affect Maryland beaches Thursday night into Friday, but the tides may continue to be dangerous throughout the weekend. Stay safe!

Following the Riverdale Park Farmers Market Thursday evening is an open mic night at Archie's Barbershop across from S & J's. The acoustic jam session will start at 7:30 p.m. and go to 10 p.m.  They will unveil their new sound system and open mic stage.

Friday morning is the start of the 56th Annual Greenbelt Labor Day Festival which will run through Monday night. The weekend of festivities includes children activities and a fair, a Miss Greenbelt Pageant, a singing competition - Greenbelt Idols, a parade, art exhibits, and much more. A National Symphony Orchestra concert in honor of Labor Day will be held on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol on Sunday at 8 p.m. Gates will open at 3:15 p.m.

The Maryland State Fair also continues into the weekend - with a concert by teen heartthrob Justin Bieber Sunday night.
