Photos: Flowers, Flags Honor Sept. 11 Victims at University Park Memorial

University Park lost five residents—three adults and two children—when American Flight 77 struck the Pentagon eleven years ago on Sept. 11, 2001.

A family from University Park—Charles S. Falkenberg, 45, Leslie A. Whittington, 45, and their two children, Zoe Falkenberg, 8, and Dana Falkenberg, 3—were on board the plane when it crashed into the western side of the building at 9:37 a.m.

Whittington, a professor at the University of Maryland and Georgetown University, had been headed to Australia with her family for a sabbatical. Zoe was a student at .

A fifth resident, Sheila M.S. Hein, 51, was killed while working at an internship at the Pentagon.

At the memorial located in the town's park, flowers, flags, and a handwritten message—"Requiescat in pacem"—adorned the plaque in observance of the 11th anniversary of the attacks.

The memorial, which also features a reflection garden, was designed by University Park resident Tom Ascraft and opened in 2005.
