What's Open, Closed in Rockville for Martin Luther King Day 2017

Rockville city facilities will be closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 16, while a celebration of his legacy is set.

ROCKVILLE, MD — Rockville City Hall and some city facilities will be closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 16. But the city has plans to celebrate the civil rights leader on Monday with performances and awards recognizing Rockville community members who are carrying on King’s legacy. The free celebration, at 10 a.m. at Richard Montgomery High School, 250 Richard Montgomery Drive is open to all.

City facilities will operate on the following schedule:

  • City Hall will be closed.
  • The Rockville Senior Center, including the fitness room, will be closed.
  • Croydon Creek Nature Center is closed Mondays.
  • The F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre box office will be closed. Tickets are always available at www.rockvillemd.gov/theatre.
  • Lincoln Park, Thomas Farm and Twinbrook community centers are open regular hours on Monday, Jan. 16.
  • The Rockville Swim and Fitness Center is open. Visit www.rockvillemd.gov/swimcenter for lap and program schedules.

Parking fees at city-owned meters will be suspended.

MLK Day Celebration

Rockville’s 45th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration on Monday, Jan. 16, will include performances and awards recognizing Rockville community members who are carrying on King’s legacy.
The free celebration, at 10 a.m. at Richard Montgomery High School, 250 Richard Montgomery Drive is open to all. A reception will follow. The program will include diverse, interactive and multicultural performances and a keynote speaker (to be announced).

The program will honor the Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Award recipient and the F. Michael Taff Award recipient.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Award is given to a student from a Rockville high school who has worked to fulfill Dr. King's dream. Find and submit the Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Award nomination form online.

The F. Michael Taff Award is given to a business, organization or adult that has helped to improve the lives of people with disabilities. Find and submit the F. Michael Taff Award nomination form online.

The public is invited to this event and the reception that immediately follows. Displays of various organizations will be up in the hallway of the school with community representatives engaging the audience in service projects and letting them know what they can do to volunteer throughout the year.

Montgomery County Closings/Changes

Montgomery County government will observe the following holiday schedule:

  • County Offices – closed
  • Libraries – closed
  • County Liquor stores – all stores will be open 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
  • Recreation – aquatics programs and facilities open; all other classes and programs canceled; Administrative office, senior centers and community centers closed
  • Montgomery Parks - for operating schedule, including Brookside Gardens, ice rinks, tennis centers, trains and carousels, visit www.MontgomeryParks.org

  • TRiPS Commuter Stores (Silver Spring and Friendship Heights) – closed
  • Refuse/recycling pickup – no collection on Monday. Trash will be collected on a sliding schedule for the week, which means all collections will be made one day later that week, last collection day is Saturday. Trash should be curbside by 7 a.m. on scheduled pick-up day.
  • The Shady Grove Processing Facility and Transfer Station - closed
  • Parking at public garages, lots, curbside meters – free
  • MCPS Schools and Administrative Offices – closed
  • State offices and courts – closed
