Names Released Of Grandfather, Child Who Drowned In Severna Park

Police have identified a grandfather who drowned in a failed attempt to rescue his 4-year-old granddaughter from a Severna Park pool.

SEVERNA PARK, MD — Authorities on Friday released the names of a grandfather who died while trying to rescue his 4-year-old granddaughter, who had struggled in the deep end of a back-yard pool and also drowned. The victims in Thursday's drownings are Aryannah Wooten, 4, and Lemuel Kane, 51, both of the 400 block of Asbury Drive in Severna Park, police say.

Anne Arundel County Fire personnel received a 911 call from the child's great-grandmother on Jamar Drive in Severna Park.

Several children were swimming at a house when the little girl was seen struggling in the water. The youths were unable to pull Aryannah out of the water, so Kane, who was sitting poolside, jumped in, Anne Arundel Police say. The grandfather could not swim, but tried to rescue the child.

With both victims in trouble, the other swimmers ran several doors away to alert the girl’s great-grandmother, who called for help, police told WTOP.

Firefighters found the grandfather and girl at the bottom of the deep pool, about nine feet down. The victims were taken to Baltimore Washington Medical Center, were they were pronounced dead.
