Top 5: Local Teacher Killed in Crash, Route 2 Construction Continues

This week Patch reported that weather issues have caused delays with the repaving of Route 2.

1. Severn School Community Mourns Loss of Latin Teacher
Thomas Heslin, the 57-year-old man who was struck and killed while riding his bike in Severna Park on Wednesday, was a Latin teacher at Severn School. After news of Heslin’s passing, social media lit up with former students expressing shock and offering condolences for their teacher.

2. Rainy Weather Delays Route 2 Paving
 The State Highway Administration (SHA) is repaving Ritchie Highway from Route 50 in Arnold to Robinson Road in Severna Park. Bob Rager, a spokesman for the SHA, said crews plan to finish milling or grinding this week, and will begin paving next week. Rager said the paving will be done between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., and should take about two weeks.

3. Hot Cars a Death Trap for Dogs, Says Severna Park Vet
With heat indexes reaching 100 degrees this week, it’s important to not only keep yourself safe from heat exposure, but your pet too. In order to help keep your dogs safe in rising temperatures, Dr. Jessica Heard with Severna Park Veterinary Hospital provided Patch with some tips. Heard said different breeds of dogs have different issues with the heat, but owners should use caution with all pets on hot days.

4. Dance Supplies Relocates to Bigger Store
Severna Park is now home to the biggest dance merchandise store in the Maryland, DC and Virginia area. Dance Supplies moved from its former location on Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard, to a bigger store in Park Plaza. 

5. Victoria’s Fancy Foods Looking to Move
Victoria’s Fancy Foods is looking to make a more to Park Plaza, but first needs a tenant to take over the store’s current lease in 1st Mariner Bank Square.
