If you think matchmaking in the modern world is difficult, you should get to know Once Upon A Mattress, the “true” account of the classic story, the Princess and the Pea. Severna Park Middle School presents the popular Broadway musical adaptation across four performances from April 13-15, 2018. Tickets are on sale online as of 12pm March 30th.
Watch this hilarious storybook unfold into a tale of intrigue, family strife, and love. Will Prince Dauntless ever marry? Not if the Queen has anything to say about it. What’s a boy with mother issues to do? Will the rest of the kingdom ever be able to marry if the prince remains unwed? Will Winnifred, the thirteenth princess put to the test, finally succeed, or will a single pea decide her fate?
SPMS’s Spartan Lyrical Society, the non-profit theatrical organization that supports vocal, drama, and musical theatre at the middle school, follows last year’s sold-out, highly-acclaimed performance of Beauty and the Beast.

Fifty-eight students are cast with nearly twenty tech crew, dozens of volunteers, and faculty making the ambitious production possible. Henry Wright stars as Prince Dauntless, Abbie Smith as Princess Winnifred, and Parijita Bastola as the Queen. More than 100 singers and dancers auditioned for the musical in January, and the cast dove immediately into a grueling schedule of more than forty rehearsals. A creative set design project also began later that month.
The show is directed by theatre veteran, Atticus Boidy, with musical direction from SPMS Chorus teacher, Sara Metcalfe, and choreography by Morgan Gingerich. Jill Robinson is the producer.

Once Upon A Mattress is fun for all ages. Four shows are offered—April 13th at 7pm; April 14th at 2pm and 7pm; and April 15th at 2pm. Tickets go on sale to the public on March 30th for a special advance price of $9.50. Group sales are available. Purchases can be made at http://www.spmssings.org or at the door subject to availability. Last year’s performances were sold out.
