'Baby Trump' Blimp Could Fly Over DC, Maryland

It's a bird. It's a plane. Or is it a "Baby Trump" float flying over DC? That's what one Silver Spring resident hopes.

SILVER SPRING, MD — Thousands of protesters filled streets in London to protest President Donald Trump's visit there ahead of his now infamous meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. One of the snarkiest forms of protest to taunt the U.S. president was a "Baby Trump" blimp flying over the city. Now, one Silver Spring resident hopes to bring the flying symbol of resistance to the DC region.

Nina Corin, a Silver Spring resident, created a GoFundMe page to try to raise $7,000 in order to bring the blimp to Montgomery County.

The 20-foot-tall balloon depicts President Donald Trump as an angry, diaper-wearing, cell phone-carrying baby. The balloon made its debut on Friday when Trump visited Great Britain.

"When I read that the blimp made him feel unwelcome in London and that the blimp would be following him on his diplomatic travels, I thought 'well why not make him feel as unwelcome and uncomfortable at home as he makes so many of us in the U.S. feel,'" Corin wrote on the fundraising page.

An activist in New Jersey, Didier Jimenez-Castro, got the idea to bring the balloon to America. He contacted the balloon's manufacturer and started a GoFundMe on Friday to raise money to have one shipped to him. By Sunday afternoon, enough money was raised and then some. As of Monday $6,324 has been raised of $4,500 goal.

Now, Silver Spring local Corin wants to bring the float to the D.C. area.

"With whatever funds raised, I'd like to invite the organizers to bring the blimp here and pay either for their travel expenses and/or shipping costs, maybe even buy a copy that can stay here, possibly pay for it to fly on multiple occasions, or stay afloat somewhere near the White House or Mar-a-Lago," Corin said.

Corin said the float needs helium, a place for setup and "babysitters" who will be volunteers.

Corin is trying to raise $7,000. If she can't raise enough to get the float, she said all funds will be donated to the American Civil Liberties Union.
