Arrest Made in Takoma Park Police Chase

Sergio Morales-Monroy was charged for several traffic charges and assault on a police officer.

Takoma Park Police arrested a Hyattsville man Sunday for assaulting a police officer and fleeing.

Sergio Morales-Monroy was charged for several traffic charges and assault on a police officer.

On Feb. 26, around 1:03 p.m., a Takoma Park Police officer observed a black Nissan vehicle with passengers traveling south on Route 650 at Kingwood Drive. The car was traveling at a high rate of speed and couldn't stay in it's lane, police said.

Morales-Monroy turned right onto Sligo Creek Parkway and the officer believed that due to the erratic driving behavior, it was possible the driver may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Morales-Monroy took the officer on a pursuit throughout various parts
of Takoma Park, Montgomery County and Prince George’s County, police said.

Morales-Monroy failed to stop for a barricade and endangered motorists and pedestrians, police said.

After driving through the Washington Adventist Hospital parking lot, Morales-Monroy was forced to stop for a red light as he approached Holton Lane. The officer stepped out of his vehicle and Morales-Monroy put his vehicle into reverse and purposely struck the officer’s marked cruiser on the rear passenger side, police said. Then Morales-Monroy fled again at a high rate of speed, police said.

The officer lost the vehicle, but a citizen told him it was located in the driveway of a dead-end street on Chatham Rd. Two of the passengers bailed out and began running on foot, police said. Morales-Monroy also bailed out and fled on foot, and the officer pursued him. The officer was unable to catch up and returned to his cruiser.

Prince George’s County Police then notified Takoma Park Police that, in an attempt to deceive police, Morales-Monroy reported his vehicle as having been stolen. The officer who was involved in the pursuit was able to identify Morales-Monroy as the driver of the vehicle he had been pursuing, police said, and he was taken into custody.
