Update: Earthquake Shakes Takoma Park, No Damage or Injuries
Quake hits 5.9 in magnitude.

Update 4:35 p.m.: Here's a little history of earthquakes in the D.C. area courtesy of the United States Geological Survey.
This is metropolitan Washington’s second quake in just over a year. A 3.6-magnitude tremor—less than one-tenth the strength of today’s quake—struck five kilometers beneath Gaithersburg last July.
Maryland’s earthquake history dates back to a 30-second quake reported in Annapolis in 1758.

USGS archives list no significant Maryland-based seismic events since an 1885 quake near the Frederick County-Loudoun County border. Reports over the last few decades have come from earthquakes in neighboring states, including:
- A 4.3-magnitude earthquake near Elgood, W. Va. in 1969
- A 1972 tremor centered in Wilmington, Del.
- A minor earthquake near the Delaware-New Jersey-Pennsylvania border in 1973
Update 3:20 p.m.: WSSC is reporting that there has been no damage to their facility and they are out checking all systems.

Update 3:10 p.m.: Takoma Park Police are reporting no obvious signs of damage. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the Takoma Park Police at 301.270.1100.
Update: 3:05 p.m: Metro is running at 15mph. Metro employees are checking all tracks. And there are no reported Metro injuries.
Update 2:30 p.m.: The Takoma Park Municipal building is not being evacuated, city spokesman Craig Terrill said. The head of maintenance for the city said the building and gas lines were not damaged.

Update 2:16 p.m.: Takoma Park Patch Twitter follower KVG_DC wrote: Wheaton Plaza Mall shook. The hanging lights were swaying a bit an windows and skylights rattling. They had everyone out.
Original Story: NBC Washington is reporting a 5.9 magnitude earthquake hit Mineral, Va. around 1:53 p.m. and was felt as far north as New York City.
