Former MoCo Church Teacher Sentenced For Sexually Abusing Minors
The former Germantown church teacher previously pleaded guilty to multiple counts of sexual abuse of a minor.
GERMANTOWN, MD — A Germantown man who taught at a church in Derwood has been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to multiple counts of sexual abuse of a minor, according to Montgomery County prosecutors.
A judge on Monday sentenced Ervin Jeovany Alfaro-Lopez, 34, to 55 years in prison with all but 20 years suspended, the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office announced.
Alfaro-Lopez pleaded guilty in February to child sex abuse and related charges. Upon release, Alfaro-Lopez will be required to register as a sex offender for life and to serve five years of supervised probation, Bethesda Magazine reported.

Ervin Jeovany Alfaro-Lopez was arrested in March 2024 following an investigation by the Montgomery County Police Department’s special victims investigations division.
Detectives began their investigation in May 2023 after a victim reported being sexually abused by a teacher at a Derwood church located in the 15700 block of Crabbs Branch Way in Montgomery County.

According to charging documents obtained by Bethesda Magazine, the victim told detectives the abuse happened during midnight services at her church when children were watching a movie. The victim said Alfaro-Lopez touched her inappropriately while she was sitting on his lap.
Following the initial complaint, three more victims came forward in the following months and reported having been sexually abused by Alfaro-Lopez at the same church, police said.
According to the charging documents, Alfaro-Lopez abused two of the victims by touching them over and under their clothing during a class.
The victims were between the ages of 6 and 12 at the time of the offenses, police said.
