Life Sentence Sought For Man Who Stabbed Pregnant Fiancée

Prosecutors are seeking a life sentence for the Silver Spring man found guilty of stabbing his pregnant fiancée in Takoma Park in 2016.

ROCKVILLE, MD — Prosecutors are seeking a life sentence for the Silver Spring man found guilty of the fatal stabbing of a pregnant Takoma Park woman in April 2016, according to reports.

State's Attorney for Montgomery County John McCarthy says his team wants life without parole for Thierry K. Nkusu, 35, who is a native of Congo.

Nkusu was recently found guilty by jury trial in the Circuit Court of Montgomery County for the murder of his fiancée Maria Veronica Mbunga, 36.

Mbunga was employed by the Montgomery County Public School Transportation System as a bus driver, police said. She was 16 weeks pregnant, and both she and her unborn child died from their injuries, police said.

“This man did not want this child. He had written letters to the family of Ms. Mbunga in Angola because he didn’t want to take financial responsibility,” McCarthy said, according to WTOP.

Officers were called for the report of a suspicious situation in the 600 block of Houston Ave. at about 2 p.m. April 27, 2016.

Nkusu was found injured near an elevator near the lobby, while officers located Nkusu with multiple stab wounds in an apartment. She was stabbed in her stomach, neck and chest, police said.

After he was taken to the hospital, it was determined that Nkusu had superficial knife wounds that did not correlate with what he told police had occurred; he did not require surgery.

Nkusu was transported from the hospital to the Takoma Park Police Department, where he was taken into custody and transported to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit.

Nkusu's sentencing is scheduled for July 2.
