• Rubbing alcohol spills near lit candle, starting fire at senior living residence (wusa9.com) — A late-night fire at Takoma Park’s Victory Tower senior residence forced an evacuation and left one person injured and four residents displaced. Officials say a rubbing alcohol container spilled near a lit candle, causing about $100,000 in damage before sprinklers and firefighters contained the blaze. 
• Strong winds cause large tree to nearly fall on Takoma Park home (dcnewsnow.com) — A Takoma Park homeowner on Glenside Drive is dealing with roof, fence, and yard damage after strong winds left a large tree dangerously leaning toward her house. She says the city and state parks agencies are disputing responsibility, leaving her anxious about the risk and planning to hire her own help while she fights to clarify who must remove the tree.
• Holiday task force makes 147 DUI arrests (mymcmedia.org) — Takoma Park officers are part of a countywide Holiday Task Force that has made 147 DUI arrests since Thanksgiving, with patrols continuing into the second week of January. Police say they’ve conducted 1,300 traffic stops, seized several firearms, and plan extra enforcement around Super Bowl Sunday to keep impaired drivers off local roads.
