GALLERY: Volunteers Honored for Thousands of Service Hours to Schools

The Baltimore County Public Schools system awarded parents certificates for their commitment to helping teachers and students.

Parents across the county were honored Thursday afternoon for accumulating (at least) 1,000 hours of volunteer service to their local schools. (See gallery above)

Six volunteers received certificates for contributing 2,500 hours of their time, while one man reached the impressive 5,000-hour mark. The event was held at the in Timonium.

Four parents received the 1,000 hour award from Pinewood Elementary in Timonium.

"They're extremely critical to always help out whenever we need them," Francesca Brown, Pinewood Elementary School principal, said. "We are a high-performing school and it's because of volunteers that we remain a high-performing school."

Anne Baglanis has one child at Pinewood, a third grader.

"I just love the kids. I love spending time with the kids," Baglanis said. "My daughter is in an [Individualized Educational Plan] program, so I like to be there. I like to be on top of things and see how things are being handled.

Sadaf Nabeel, another parent volunteer and award recipient, came to Pinewood when her son was in the second grade. Nabeel has been a home room mom and assists in the library.

"I feel so good," Nabeel said. "I feel proud of myself.

Other Timonium volunteer award winners include Phyllis Mann and Robert Dey.
