Intersection, Light Rail To Close in Lutherville Friday

The rubberized pad at W. Seminary Avenue and Light Rail Road that motorists use over the Light Rail tracks is set to be replaced, and could take four days.

Expect to take a detour around the intersection of W. Seminary and Railroad avenues Friday night through early Tuesday morning.

That's because it will be closed for four days while the Maryland Transit Administration works to replace the crossing pad over the Light Rail track, according to a news release from the MTA.

That pad was installed with the track in 1991, and needs to be replaced because of its age, it states.

Replacing that rubberized pad where cars cross over the tracks will make for a smoother ride, said Charlie Gischlar, spokesman for the Maryland State Highway Administration.

Light Rail service between the Falls Road and Timonium Light Rail stations will also be suspended during those days, the release states.

The road and rail closures are set to begin at 8 p.m. Friday, May 3, and are expected to end at 4 a.m. Tuesday, May 7, the release states.

During the rail closure, "shuttle buses will operate between Falls Road and Timonium during the temporary suspension in service. While the buses will run regularly, passengers should plan extra travel time," the release states.

Motorists will take a detour around the intersection. The detour leads through historic Lutherville, Gischlar said, and will generally follow this path: from Falls Road to MD 25, then to the Baltimore Beltway, to Charles Street and Bellona Avenue.

Until Friday, original signage at the site had mistakenly seemed to indicate that W. Seminary Avenue will be closed permanently. However, the signage has been corrected, said Terry Owens, MTA spokesman.

"There is new signage up there," Owens said Friday. "The messages will be modified as the work progresses."
