$66K Grant To Fund Towson Security Cameras
Businesses can get reimbursed and a sticker for putting up surveillance cameras in Towson.

TOWSON, MD — Businesses that install exterior security cameras to improve public safety in Towson can get reimbursed from the Towson Chamber of Commerce.
A $66,000 grant from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development will fund the improvements.
“We all care deeply about keeping Towson vibrant, safe and strong and this grant is another positive step to do just that,” Nancy Hafford, executive director of the Towson Chamber of Commerce, said in a statement.

About 65 percent of the buildings in Towson are equipped with surveillance systems, according to Hafford, who said they help deter and solve crimes.
“While our officers do an exceptional job of patrolling, the reality is that we cannot be everywhere at every minute of the day," Captain Deanna L. Chemelli of the Baltimore County Police Department said in a statement. "If a crime does occur, we have a much greater chance of solving it with the additional technology."

Chemelli leads the Towson Precinct.
"We continue to encourage business leaders and community members to be a valuable extra set of eyes and ears and be our ambassadors in the community," Chemelli said.
Businesses with existing or newly added cameras can get stickers from the chamber that say: “Smile You’re on Camera,” to notify people they are being recorded.
The grant also includes funding for a community ambassador position. That person will be hired as a guide for visitors and will maintain the downtown streetscape, according to the chamber.
“All of Towson's stakeholder groups are working hard to take the important steps to increase security and provide peace of mind for residents, merchants and visitors,” Councilman David Marks, who represents Towson, said in a statement.
The chamber is working with county, state, university and community groups to improve public safety, officials said.
