BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — Sometimes called Patriots Day, Sept. 11 has become a national day of remembrance honoring the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Several services in Baltimore County will pay respects, including two honorary volunteering events.

Americans felt a collective trauma as first one and then another plane flew into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001. As the truth dawned on people watching from their TVs that America was under attack, another plane took aim at the Pentagon. A fourth was brought down in a field in Pennsylvania in a final act of heroism by passengers who realized their flight had been hijacked.

At least 2,973 people lost their lives in the attacks. The somber anniversary is marked across the country with memorial services, moments of silence and community events.

On Wednesday, a candlelight vigil will be held in Parkville at McAvoy's Sports Bar & Grill from 6:45 p.m. to 8 p.m. Organizers will read the names of every Marylander who died during the 9/11 attacks and the ensuing war on terror. Hosted by The Hope & Peace Foundation and Maryland's 9/11 Rolling Memorial, the event will also feature patriotic music, honor guards and bagpipers at 2531 Putty Hill Ave.

The same groups also had a Patriot Day ride last Saturday. The police-escorted ride began at Darlington Volunteer Fire Company and ended at McAvoy's.

The Hope & Peace Foundation placed a flag for every victim last Friday outside McAvoy's. Residents can visit this Path of Honor through Wednesday along Putty Hill Avenue.

The Community College of Baltimore County is organizing a 9/11 service project at its Catonsville campus. The Student Programming Board will honor the victims by writing thank you notes for first responders and greeting cards for nursing homes. The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Quad Clocktower, located at 800 South Rolling Road. If it rains, the project will move indoors to the lounge of the Barn.

Another 9/11 service project will be held Saturday in Catonsville at the Benjamin Banneker Historical Park and Museum. Volunteers will sand park benches, clean signs and pick up trash on trails. All ages are welcome, but minors must be accompanied by an adult. Hosted by Yieldcamp and the Baltimore County Volunteer Center, the event runs from 10 a.m. to noon at 300 Oella Ave. Registration is available here.
