TOWSON, MD — A 26-year-old Baltimore man died Tuesday in a Towson mass shooting and car crash that also left nine people injured ranging in age from 14 to 27, Baltimore County police said.

According to Baltimore County Police Chief Robert McCullough, officers responded to the 8500 block of Loch Raven Boulevard shortly before 7:15 p.m. after receiving multiple 911 calls about shots fired and a car in flames.

When police arrived, they found a vehicle overturned and on fire outside a nearby funeral home, authorities said. The shooting and the crash were not related to any services at the funeral home, which was closed at the time.

At a news conference Wednesday, McCollough said officers located Charles Graham Jr. near the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Of the nine people injured, McCollough said eight were suffering from gunshot wounds. All 10 victims were in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

According to police, those injured from gunfire included a:

  • 18-year-old male

  • 17-year-old male
  • 16-year-old male
  • 14-year-old male
  • 15-year-old female
  • 17-year-old female

A 24-year-old male also suffered injuries during the incident. The nature of his injuries was unclear.

Those injured were taken to nearby trauma centers for treatment, police said. As of Wednesday, one person had been released.

McCollough said the shooting was targeted and the people involved knew each other. There is no ongoing threat to the public.

"There appears to be some type of incident that led to the vehicle crashing and catching on fire. Right now our investigators are looking into the circumstances leading up to that," McCullough said at a Tuesday night press conference recorded by WBAL.

McCullough previously said the gunshots may have been fired at multiple locations in the area and the confrontation ended with the crash at the funeral home.

"There are some additional scenes that we're investigating right now where other gunfire took place throughout the neighborhood and that was evidenced by the multiple calls for service from the neighbors who were calling 911 about the gunshots in the community," he said. "It appeared that it was like an ongoing, rolling type of gun situation that led up to the funeral home, and it ended right there at the funeral home, so it was along that street and in that location."

On Wednesday, McCollough said investigators were continuing to search for the person or people responsible for the shooting. He said the department planned to increase patrols and police presence in the neighborhood due to concerns of possible retaliation.

"We are here for you," McCollough said. "Some of the resources deployed will be easy to spot. Some won’t be, and that is by design."

Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski urged potential witnesses to share information. Tipsters should call 911 or 410-887-4636.

"This is an incident that is shocking, particularly for those of us in Baltimore County. These types of incidents are unheard of here, and so it really shocks the conscience," Olszewski said.

Olszewski offered condolences while also pledging resources for police and fire officials as they investigate.

"Our hearts go out to anyone who is impacted by violence. We will be supporting our public safety officials in the work ahead, and I just thank them for the work that they're doing now," Olszewski said.
