LA Fitness Opening at Towson Commons

American health club chain LA Fitness is opening a location at Towson Commons, at the corner of York Road and Pennsylvania Avenue. 

"Towson Commons is the geographic center of downtown Towson," Councilman David Marks said in a news release. "This announcement not only redevelops a critical area of the commercial core, but it also means that revitalization is spreading to every part of downtown Towson."

Construction is already underway for the two-level, 52,700-square-foot facility, which will include the addition of windows on the side of Towson Commons facing York Road and a staircase with glass rails, said Fronda Cohen, a county spokeswoman. The opening date for the fitness center was not immediately known.

The location will feature basketball and racquet ball courts, a spin area with stadium levels, an indoor heated lap pool, whirlpool spa and saunas, personal trainers, and babysitting options, according to the release. Group fitness classes will include yoga, cycling, mat pilates, kickbox cardio and aqua aerobics.

County Executive Kevin Kamenetz touted LA Fitness as the latest addition to development efforts in downtown Towson, which also includes the Towson Square entertainment center, the construction of more than 1,500 luxury apartment over the last four years and new businesses coming to the Towson City Center.

"It's truly Towson's Time. We are thrilled that LA Fitness is bringing new energy back to Towson Commons," Kamenetz said in the release. "This is a great location in the heart of downtown Towson, convenient for workers, students and residents."

Bally Total Fitness, which was acquired by LA Fitness in 2011, had a location nearby at 1 E. Joppa Road that closed late February.
