Loch Raven Gears Up for Relay for Life

students are lacing up for a good cause for a fourth year.

The school is participating in Relay for Life, the popular annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

On April 28, from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., 263 participants on 43 teams will take part in the indoor walking relay. The school has raised $13,718 in pledges for the program so far.

Since 2009, Loch Raven students and teachers have raised more than $100,000 for cancer research.

"Our totals are actually a lot more than what some universities pull together to raise," said Erin Confair, the chair of the school's world languages department and the Relay for Life faculty adviser.

It's a cause close to the hearts of students and teachers.

In 2008, principal Jacqueline Lamp, a Rodgers Forge resident, died of ovarian cancer. Since then, several students and teachers have faced cancer struggles of their own.

"We lost our principal. We dealt with watching our two members of our faculty and one student fight cancer," Confair said. "Just by working together, I think it makes a difference in the lives of the students, the lives of the community and the lives of the faculty."

In addition to the relay, students will host a charity car wash at the station at 800 Goucher Blvd. on April 20.
