PHOTO: New Tiger Statue 'Pounces' On Towson U.

The university alumni association unveiled the new statue Tuesday.

It's a new tradition that many graduates will take a photo of themselves in cap and gown with, near or atop the tiger statue on York Road.

That bronze tiger is depicted walking, perhaps stalking its prey. But those who see themselves "leaping" into the next chapter will probably feel more at home with the new cat on campus.

The Towson University Alumni Association donated a new, "pouncing" tiger statue, which was unveiled in a brief ceremony Tuesday afternoon. The new statue, visible from the university's new gateway on Towsontown Boulevard, weighs 700 pounds—heftier than its older brothers—and even has a step for would-be riders.

The Stephens Hall tiger was also commissioned by the alumni association and, in 2009, the student government installed a duplicate in front of the university library.

Lou Dollenger, the alumni association's president, did not have the new tiger's price tag immediately available, but said the university's athletics department ordered a second to be installed near the , which opens in 2013.
