TOWSON, MD — BJ's Wholesale Club hopes to replace the former Walmart in the Towson Place shopping center, multiple reports said.

The two-story building has sat vacant since Walmart closed in April 2024.

The Baltimore Sun reported that the potential BJ's still needs Baltimore County's approval.

"Development plan calls for a new building and a reconfigured and more level parking area," County Council Member Mike Ertel (D-Towson) told The Sun. "I feel that BJ's will be a great addition to this shopping center and fill a need for a wholesale shopping venue inside the Beltway in central Baltimore County."

WMAR reported that construction could begin in 2027, setting BJ's up for a potential opening in mid-2028.

The former Walmart building spans nearly 155,000 square feet, shopping center owner Kimco Realty said.

The Walmart, located at 1238 Putty Hill Ave. Suite 5, had 207 employees. The workers were paid for two months after the closure, and they were given a chance to transfer to other locations. If staff members didn't transfer, they received a severance package.
