Towson Safeway Worker Tests Positive For New Coronavirus

Strict sanitization measures have been put into place to keep the store open.

TOWSON, MD — One employee at the Safeway store on York Road in Towson has tested positive for the new coronavirus, a Safeway spokesperson confirmed in an email to Patch on Monday. The worker who tested positive for the virus is receiving medical care.

The spokesperson said the sick employee has not been in the York Road store since May 4, but other store employees could be encouraged to self-quarantine for 14 days. Any employee who self-quarantines is eligible for up to 14 days of quarantine pay.

Safeway said the store will remain open, and extra measures are being taken to keep shoppers and workers healthy.

"That store has been through multiple cycles of our enhanced cleaning, sanitizing and/or disinfecting process since that day," the spokesperson said in a statement. "In an abundance of caution, we conducted a thorough cleaning, sanitizing and/or disinfecting with guidance from third-party sanitation experts."

Further, all Safeway employees have been reminded to practice social distancing, wash their hands and disinfect their check stands every hour, the spokesperson said. They've also been reminded to stay home and call their health care provider if they develop a fever or symptoms of a respiratory sickness.
