Towson Soccer, Baseball Not Allowed To Question Elimination

Towson University cut its baseball and soccer programs, notifying the players in a brief meeting Friday morning on campus, according to WBAL Radio.

The coaches of the baseball and mens soccer teams at Towson University weren't allowed to ask questions Friday, as the school's president announced the elimination of those two programs.

In interviews with WBAL Radio, baseball coach Mike Gottlieb and soccer coach Frank Olszewski outlined how they weren't allowed to attend the players-only meeting with president Maravene Loeschke.

"I was never given any input. No one asked me if we could get by with less. I requested to speak with the president on two different occasions. One time I was denied. The second time, they did not get back to me," Gottlieb told WBAL. "She spoke with the kids Friday morning, and I was not allowed to be there and she would not entertain any questions from the kids. She's supposed to be a president for the students. I haven't seen that through this whole process."

Gottlieb is left to finish coaching the remainder of the 2013 season, while Olszewski's tenure ends amid spring practices.

Loeschke accepted the recommendation given by Towson's athletic director Mike Waddell back in October that the programs be eliminated and announced her decision by email Friday morning, according to reports from WBAL Radio.

Olszewski and Gottlieb were fired as a result of the decision, WBAL reported. Combined, the two men had served the school for more than 70 years.

After announcing the decision by email, WBAL reported that Loeschke called a three-minute long meeting with players from each of the teams at the school's Johnny Unitas Stadium Field House.

In the meeting, Loeschke "said the programs would be dropped, added the players scholarships would be honored, took no questions from the players and then walked out," according to the WBAL story.
