At 8:30 a.m. that morning, crews will reinstall the refurbished bell atop Stephens Hall. The bell was removed and touched up by McShane Bell Foundry in Glen Burnie, the same company that installed it when the building opened in 1915.
The 97-year-old bell last rang to commemorate an anniversary of the September 11 attacks. After it's reinstalled, the bell will be rung to mark special occasions on campus. But it will likely not ring on Saturday, according to officials, because a new remote-controlled electronic ringer has not yet been fully installed.
