Towson University Grad Plummets to Death

Avishek Sengupta, a 28-year-old Ellicott City resident, was critically injured after participating in a Tough Mudder obstacle course.

A 28-year-old Towson University graduate is dead after he reportedly suffered serious injuries while participating in the Mid-Atlantic Tough Mudder obstacle course in West Virginia Saturday.

According to The [Martinsburg] Journal, Avishek Sengupta, of Ellicott City, was hospitalized after partaking in the "Walk the Plank" portion of the Glengary course, where participants jump 15 feet into freezing waters. Sengupta was reportedly taken off life support Sunday evening.

"As organizers, we take our responsibility to provide a safe event to our participants very seriously,” said Will Dean, CEO of Tough Mudder in a statement. "Tough Mudder is devastated by this tragic accident."

The statement continues by saying that Sengupta's death was the only fatality in Tough Mudder's three-year history, which includes more than 50 events with approximately 750,000 participants.

The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident.

Tough Mudder courses are 10 to 12 miles and are billed on the company's website as "probably the toughest event on the planet."
