West Towson Woman Leaves Corporate World For Dream Career

A West Towson woman has left the corporate world behind to follow her true passion—interior design.

Emily Peterson, 25, graduated from what was then called the College of Notre Dame—now Notre Dame of Maryland University—in 2010 with a business degree focusing on accounting, and was two credits shy of an art degree.

From July 2010 through June 2012, Peterson worked at Constellation Energy until she decided to quit and pursue her dream career.

"I've always wanted to [be an interior designer] but wanted to have a good foundation for business first," she said. "Interior design and art always came naturally to me."

Peterson is planning to open Bruns Interiors, a home-based business, on March 1. Services include flooring, window treatments, wallpaper, painting, furnishings and project management.

What Peterson lacks in professional experience, she said she makes up for in perspective. She has previously done interior design work for family and friends.

"I feel that I have that out-of-the-box thinking," she said. "I offer a new, fresh, eclectic outlook."

Peterson, who is the youngest in a family of six children, said she was especially motivated to pursue a career in interior design after her father passed away a year ago.

"It was either do it now or go back into the corporate world," she said.
