Beach Report: Explosions On Assateague

Going to Assateague Island this summer? You're bound to see the wild horses and beaches the island is known for. What you won't find... anymore, that is: World War II-era ordnance.

The island's past as a military testing facility made a comeback earlier this week, when approximately 100 unexploded munitions washed up on the beach there, according to a FOX 45 report.

The beach was temporarily closed Tuesday afternoon while Ocean City's bomb squad surveyed the scene, then called in a team from Aberdeen Proving Ground, which separated the weapons into two groupings and exploded them, according to the report.

Salisbury television station WMDT posted a photo on Facebook of what appears to be the detonation.

The rest of the state park was still open to visitors during the incident, according to the park's Facebook page. The beach reopened later in the afternoon.
