Beach Report: Explosions On Assateague

WWII-era munitions found on the beach, known for its wild horses.

Going to Assateague Island this summer? You're bound to see the wild horses and beaches the island is known for. What you won't find... anymore, that is: World War II-era ordnance.

The island'sΒ past as a military testing facilityΒ made a comeback earlier this week, when approximately 100 unexploded munitions washed upΒ on the beach there, according to aΒ FOX 45 report.

The beach was temporarilyΒ closed Tuesday afternoonΒ while Ocean City's bomb squad surveyed the scene, then called in a team from Aberdeen Proving Ground, which separated the weapons into two groupings and exploded them, according to the report.

Salisbury television station WMDTΒ posted a photo on FacebookΒ of what appears to be the detonation.

The rest of theΒ state park was still open to visitors during the incident,Β according to the park'sΒ Facebook page. The beach reopened later in the afternoon.
