Mba Uchechi from Century High School won a Gold Key in Writing for his poem Living Lie and Honorable Mention for the poem The Iron Sword. Brendan Liwanag received Honorable Mention in Short Story for The Beast of the Caribbean Isles and Lurking from the Otherworldly Shadows. Avery Morse from Liberty High School received Honorable Mention in Science Fiction and Fantasy for Hiding Behind Numbers.
This year, 1,300 teens from Baltimore and the surrounding region submitted 3,000 works of visual and literary art. All works are blindly judged by local visual artists, novelists, poets, playwrights, educators, and editors. Each piece is judged based on originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice. Works by the Gold Key recipients will move on to compete at the national level.
Five works of writing and five works of art from each region are selected by local judges as American Voices & Visions nominees, who are then celebrated in local exhibitions and ceremonies. From the pool of nominees, a panel of jurors in New York City selects one writer and one artist from each region to receive an American Voices Medal or an American Visions Medal, the highest regional honor. These Medalists are celebrated during National Events and at the National Exhibition in New York City.
All regional award recipients — Gold Key, Silver Key, and Honorable Mentions — are invited, along with their guests, teachers, and our esteemed jurors, to a nationwide online Awards Ceremony for the regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards recipients on Sunday, March 6, 2022, from 3 to 4 p.m. The national awards will be announced in March.
