Carroll Lutheran Village Resident Sculpts Tribute to Pioneering Educator Mae. E. Prince
Bust Will be Featured in a Planned Museum Honoring the Legacy of Robert Moton High School
Sculptor and Carroll Lutheran Village resident Martha Wiseman recently unveiled a bust honoring Mae E. Prince, a supervisor and teacher for forty years in Carroll County schools during segregation, at CLV. CLV residents and team members; Bill Hudson, president of the Former Students and Friends of Robert Moton High School organization; and other alumni attended the unveiling.
The Former Students and Friends of Robert Moton organization commissioned Wiseman to create the sculpture because of her strong belief in the mission to preserve the legacy of the Robert Moton School. After spending months sculpting the clay bust, using late-life photographs of Prince for reference, the fired and hand painted bust mimics the look of traditional bronze bust.
“This project was significant to me,” said Wiseman. “Mae Prince was a pillar of strength, leadership and quiet dignity. Honoring her through art is one way to ensure her impact is never forgotten.”

Before retirement, Wiseman worked as a social worker and psychotherapist. She began sculpting in her 30s for fun, later taking formal classes and developing her skill into an artistic calling. Thanks to the lifestyle CLV offers, her passion for sculpting continues to shine—this time in service of a larger community mission.
“Martha’s work is more than art—it’s a bridge between generations and a powerful visual reminder of the strength and perseverance of Black educators and students during segregation,” said Ann McDermott, CLV’s associate executive director. “We’re honored to have such a gifted and purpose-driven individual in our community.”
