Three police officers were shot at an incident at UPMC Memorial Hospital in West Manchester Township, Pennsylvania on Saturday, February 22, 2025. 30-year-old officer Andrew Duarte was transported to Wellspan York Hospital after the incident where he died from his injuries from gunfire, at 12:19 p.m., just five days after his 30th birthday

Duarte served in the West York Borough Police Department. In addition to the three officers shot in the incident, a doctor, nurse, and a housekeeper were also shot.

According to multiple media sources, an individual walked into the hospital around 10:35 a.m. carrying a bag with a gun and zip ties. He went to the second floor of the ICU unit, where he took people hostage and zip-tied their arms.

When the police arrived, the gunmen pulled a gun on a nurse and ordered the police to stand back. The gunman then walked into the hallway where the police were stationed. A shootout ensued, with officers exchanging gunfire. The shooter was ultimately shot and killed.

The Ocean City Maryland Police report that “Duarte jump-started his law enforcement career … in Ocean City. Duarte was a seasonal police officer in 2016 and was assigned to the dayshift on the north end of town. Duarte served five years with the Denver Police Department before transferring to the West York Borough Police Department in 2022….”

According to the Ocean City Police, on Saturday, February 22, 2025, “Three officers made the ultimate sacrifice to keep their respective communities safe. Two of those officers started their careers with the Ocean City Police Department… Officers Cameron Girvin and Christopher Reese proudly served the Virginia Beach Police Department before being killed in the line of duty.

“The pair conducted a traffic stop on Friday, February 21, 2025, around 11:30 p.m., where a struggle ensued with the driver. Both officers were shot during the struggle and later succumbed to their injuries surrounded by family and friends at nearby hospitals.

“Officer Cameron Girvin started his law enforcement career with the Ocean City Police Department in 2018. Girvin served as a public safety aide and was assigned to the boardwalk during the evening shift. Girvin became a police officer with the Virginia Beach Police Department in 2020.

One news outlet in Harrisburg reported late Sunday evening, “The chief of the Northern York Regional Police Department said one of the officers injured in Saturday's mass shooting at UPMC Memorial Hospital has been released from care, and that the other police officer injured is still recovering.”

In the past two days, three officers from nearby states have made the ultimate sacrifice.
