Westminster Under Tornado Warning

BREAKING: Take cover in Westminster, the National Weather Service warns, due to a storm with rotation.

CARROLL COUNTY, MD — The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for part of Carroll County Thursday, July 29.

Officials issued the warning after 4 p.m. when radar indicated rotation with a storm near Westminster that was moving east at 25 mph.

The storm will be near Westminster around 4:10 p.m. and Hampstead around 4:25 p.m., officials said.

"For those in the direct path of a tornado touchdown, flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter," the National Weather Service warned.

"TAKE COVER NOW! Move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building," the National Weather Service warned. "Avoid windows. If you are outdoors, in a mobile home, or in a vehicle, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris."

Trees will likely be damaged. Roofs, siding and windows may be altered, while mobile homes may be destroyed, according to the tornado warning.

Other locations that may be impacted by "this tornadic thunderstorm" are as follows, according to the National Weather Service: Wagners Mill, Finksburg, Carrollton, Patapsco, Reese and Uniontown.

A tornado watch is in effect until 9 p.m. for nine jurisdictions, including Carroll County.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect until 4:45 p.m. for parts of Carroll and Baltimore counties due to a storm with 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-sized hail.
