2 Hospitalized With Serious Injuries Following Wheaton Crash: PD

WHEATON, MD — Two people are hospitalized with serious injuries after two cars collided in Wheaton on Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

The collision happened at the intersection of Veirs Mill and Newport Mill roads around 1:30 p.m.

Montgomery County police said a 2000 Toyota Sienna — driven by Jayantha Malwadamgedara, 45, of Wheaton — was turning left onto northbound Newport Mill Road when it collided with a 2002 Nissan Altima that was traveling west on Veirs Mill Road.

Malwadamgedara was ejected from his car and then rushed to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to county fire and rescue officials. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

The driver of the Nissan Altima — identified as Alexander Andres Fuentes Trejo, 27, of Silver Spring — was also taken to a hospital with serious injuries. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

Veirs Mill Road was temporarily closed between Monterey Drive and Newport Mill Road.
