CVS Taking Over 3 Rite Aid Stores, Prescriptions In MA

After more than six decades in business, Rite Aid shuttered all of its locations.

MASSACHUSETTS — CVS Pharmacy is taking over select Rite Aid assets across the country, including prescription files from 626 stores in 15 states, the company said Wednesday in a news release. In Massachusetts, three stores are included in the deal.

The drugstore deal also includes the acquisition of 63 Rite Aid and Bartell Drugs stores in Idaho, Oregon and Washington. In all, CVS purchased the prescription files of more than 9 million patients.

The deal to acquire select Rite Aid assets from the chain’s bankruptcy was announced by CVS in May. Rite Aid found more than a dozen buyers for its customer prescription files, including Walgreens, Albertsons and Kroger, but CVS was by far the largest buyer.

More than 3,500 former Rite Aid and Bartell Drug employees now have jobs with CVS. Most of the transferred Rite Aid prescription files are to stores within three miles of a former Rite Aid store, and nearly half are within a mile, according to the release.
