Massachusetts will be the latest to join other states in encouraging the use of electric-assist bikes as a transportation alternative.

MASSACHUSETTS — A program offering discounts to Massachusetts residents interested in buying electronic-assist bikes may be coming as soon as this fall, according to the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center.

MassCEC said it is planning to launch a statewide e-bike rebate program in either fall 2024 or spring 2025. The program would offer incentives to offset the cost of e-bikes for low and moderate-income residents.

The rebate program would follow similar programs in other states. Rhode Island's program, for example, offers up to $350 toward the purchase of an e-bike, or up to $750 for lower-income households. The MassCEC program could offer rebates between $800 and $1,200, depending on household income, according to StreetsBlog Mass. MassCEC is the state's economic development agency focused on growing the state's clean energy sector.

The e-bike rebate follows other state rebate programs for cars and home energy infrastructure. The state already offers a $3,500 rebate on new and used electric vehicles, and $7,500 for electric trucks, for example.

The MassCEC program would also be an expansion of an e-bike program that's been operating in the Worcester area for more than two years. Through a MassCEC grant, MassBike gave 100 Worcester residents free e-bikes in 2022. The program was expanded this year through a new grant to residents in towns surrounding Worcester.
