MA Ranks High On New List Of Safest States

Check out how the Bay State stacks up against the rest of the country when it comes to a variety of safety measures.

A new analysis found that Massachusetts is the second-safest state in the country. The study comes from personal finance website WalletHub.

To come up with its list of safest states, WalletHub analyzed all 50 states using 52 "key indicators of safety, grouped into five categories."

These measures include everything from assaults per capita to financial losses from climate disasters per resident and economic factors like unemployment.

Massachusetts had the lowest number of fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles of travel.

The Bay State also "really shines when it comes to financial safety," WalletHub noted. This includes high levels of job security, a high level of the population with a bank account, and low bankruptcy filings.

Parents also say that children are safe at school. Massachusetts has the fourth-lowest levels of crime, ranking high in fewest thefts, murders, and manslaughters.

Overall, New England fared well in the analysis, with Vermont ranking No. 1, New Hampshire at No. 3, Maine at No. 4, and Connecticut at No. 6.

“The safest states in America protect their residents from harm in a multitude of different ways, from keeping crime rates low and maintaining safe roadways to having strong economies and job markets that prevent people from falling into dangerous financial situations," WalletHub Analyst Chip Lupo said.

The top 10 safest states according to WalletHub are:

  2. Massachusetts
  3. New Hampshire
  4. Maine
  5. Utah
  6. Connecticut
  7. Hawaii
  8. Minnesota
  9. Rhode Island
  10. Wyoming
