MASSACHUSETTS — Students in Massachusetts will have to do better than SNOWbegone Kenobi, Jennifer Snowpez and, uh, Unstoppable Jeff.

Those are just a few of the names students in Vermont picked for that state's snow plow force. Taking a cue from VTrans, MassDOT this week announced it will allow elementary school students in Massachusetts to submit names for 12 plows that will operate during this winter season.

“We are excited to provide elementary school students with an opportunity to have some fun this winter season by helping to name a snowplow,” MassDOT CEO Jamey Tesler said in a news release. “The contest is a great way for younger students to take some time to have fun, be creative, work together to identify proposed names and be part of a new state government initiative, and we encourage all statewide schools to participate.”

Vermont has been letting students across the state name plows for the past two winter seasons, bestowing about 250 plows with names like Super Plow Snow Pants, Lord Snowdemort and Fast and Flurrious.

MassDOT employees will review names submitted by students, with two winning classrooms for each of the six MassDOT highway divisions. The contest will be open to two grade levels: kindergarten through 4th, and 5th through 8th.
