New MA Traffic Laws That May Change How You Drive In 2026
Here's what's new, and may be coming, in the New Year.
It's a new year and there are some new rules of the road in Massachusetts. If you don't know them, you can't follow them. So make sure you're up to speed with what 2026 has in store for drivers.
Here's what's new — and what may come to pass — in 2026:
Automated Speed Enforcement Cameras: Gov. Maura Healy's Fiscal Year 2026 budget proposes legalizing statewide speed cameras. A first violation would be a warning with a $25 fine for a subsequent violation, or $100 for a subsequent violation 25 mph or more above the speed limit.

Expanded "Move Over" Law: A bill passed by the Senate and awaiting House action increases fines from $250 to $500 and mandates driver education for repeat offenses, adding utility workers and stranded motorists to the protected list.
Federal Drunk-Driving Detection Mandate: New passenger vehicles — model year 2026 onward — are slated to include advanced drunk-driving detection systems per the federal HALT Drunk Driving Act.
