Acton Police Warn Against Unemployment Scam
The scams have surfaced in several ways, including phone calls, emails and text messages.
ACTON, MA —A new scam is sweeping through Acton and this time, its taking advantage of people in need of unemployment benefits.
Acton police warned residents to be cautious when reviewing anything sent to them about unemployment benefits. The department said it has received several reports of the scam. What makes this scam extra tricky is that it has been presented in different forms including email, phone calls, text messages and mail.
The unemployment scam comes as the state faces some of the highest levels of unemployment in decades. The unemployment rate in Massachusetts is 17.5 and the unemployment rate in Acton is 10.7 according to last month's data from the state department of unemployment assistance.
