Observe Memorial Day in Acton

Monday, May 27 is the time to honor our patriots and welcome the summer.

Memorial Day is a time to commemorate those who have fallen in service to the United States.

The official celebration of these heroes began in the 1860s after the Civil War, when wreaths were laid on the graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers. The practice was fully recognized throughout the existing states by 1890.

So, what is the best way to honor the holiday?

In Acton, the parade will step off from Acton-Boxborough Regional High School at 10am. The parade will march up Main Street and stop at the town common where an abbreviated ceremony will be held. The parade will then continue down Concord Road and arrive at Woodlawn Cemetery, at which point the main ceremony will take place.

Many villages, towns and cities host Memorial Day parades attended by a host of community members and civic groups.

Mingle with friends as marching bands, fire trucks, Boy and Girl Scouts, veterans, sports teams, and police and firefighters proceed ceremoniously through the town. Don’t forget to wave your flag.

And after the parade?

Time to party! Host a barbecue, or attend a local fair or festival. You can even partake in a little Memorial Day shopping and take advantage of widespread and well-advertised sales.

In preparation for that first barbecue of the season, you might want to inspect your grill and refresh or purchase new backyard cooking equipment. You can find your tools and accessories at:
