All-Way Stop Sign Approved at Jenkins and Salem

The Board of Selectmen Monday night unanimously approved an all-way stop at the notorious Salem Street and Jenkins Road intersection in Andover.

Where as multiple accidents occur at this spot each year, the most recent being just weeks ago, there has been a push by residents in the area to make the intersection a four-way stop.

"People have been asking for it for ten years," said Selectman Alex Vispoli.

Currently, there are stop signs for traffic on Salem Street and nothing for vehicles traveling on Jenkins Road. The vote on Monday will make traffic on both roads stop.

Officials Monday night mentioned line of sight issues with the intersection. The wide intersection requires vehicles on Salem Street to pull out far into Jenkins Road in order to check for oncoming traffic.

Officials did not say when the all-way stop signs would be installed.

Selectmen approved the all-way stop signs while voting on a large number of traffic signage changes.

Other changes include adding no parking, 30-minute parking, and two-hour parking signs to certain areas around downtown and adding a center line to Blanchard Street near the Tewksbury line.

Selectmen approved a number of other traffic signage changes in August as well.
