Andover Considers Future of Shawsheen School, Seeks Public Input
Town officials discussed reuse options for Shawsheen School as the preschool is moving out. A second public meeting is set for April 16.
ANDOVER, MA – The Town of Andover has started discussions on the future of the Shawsheen School as it prepares to take ownership next year.
At a public meeting on March 4, residents learned about the school’s history, its available space, and possible short- and long-term uses.
The preschool currently using the building will move to the recently completed West Elementary/Shawsheen Preschool, and the town will take over the property on July 1, 2025.

Officials presented two short-term options: leaving the building empty or using it for recreation programs. Keeping it vacant would cost nearly $285,000 in security and maintenance, while recreation programming would be funded by participant fees.
Long-term options include selling the property for redevelopment or keeping it for municipal use. If sold, it could be used for housing, childcare, or community facilities. If kept, the town could invest in renovations or make minimal upgrades for public use.
