Andover School Committee Backs Universal Free Meals Legislation
In a letter to Gov. Maura Healey and other politicians, the committee expressed support for making the pandemic-era program permanent.
ANDOVER, MA — The members of the Andover School Committee on Friday wrote a letter to Gov. Maura Healey and Andover's state delegation expressing their "strong support" for the Universal Free Meals program.
The School Committee said that 10 percent of Andover Public Schools students are eligible for free and reduced meals and even more face food insecurity. That's why the committee supports the bill that would give all students access to healthy meals regardless of their social or economic status.
In the letter, the committee highlighted several reasons why the continuation of the pandemic-era free meals program is good for children and families.

"Research shows that a well-nourished child is a better learner, test-taker and participant in school," Andover Public Schools wrote in a press release highlighting the committee's letter. "Students who have free and nutritious meals available at school reduce the financial strain on food budgets at home."
The federal government made all school meals available for free during the pandemic. Then, in July 2022, former Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker signed an extension for the program through June 2023.

The most recent legislation, which was co-sponsored by State Rep. Tram Nguyen (D-18th Essex) and State Rep. Frank Moran (D-17th Essex), would make the program permanent in all Massachusetts public school districts. The School Committee also addressed the letter to State Sen. Barry Finegold (D-2nd Essex and Middlesex).
"We appreciate the commitment shown for this program by bill co-sponsors, Rep. Nguyen and Rep. Moran, and respectfully request their ongoing support for the bill," the School Committee wrote in the letter. "We also appreciate the supplemental budget proposed by Gov. Healey, which includes funding to continue this program. Thank you for your commitment to the health, well-being and financial security of Massachusetts public school students."
