Andover Student Wins 3rd Place In National Science Contest
An Andover middle school student won third place in the 3M Young Scientist Challenge.
ANDOVER, MA — An Andover student won third place in the 3M Young Scientist Challenge. Sarah Wang, a 7th grade at The Pike School in Andover, won for her development of the Spring Epilepsy Detection Glove.
The glove Sarah developed can "detect tonic-clonic and myoclonic epileptic seizures with common hand movements and tracks seizure statistics through a smart phone application," according to a statement.
As the third-place winner, Sarah was awarded a $2,000 prize. The 2023 Young Science Challenge tasks contestants with harnessing the power of science to create an innovation that will improve lives and solve a global challenge.

Sarah applied for the 3M Young Scientist Challenge earlier this year and was selected as a top finalist among applicants across the country. Once named a finalist, she worked with Stephanie Owen 3M Specialist Advanced Product Development, Transportation and Electronics Business at 3M, who collaborated with Sarah one-on-one to transform her idea from concept to prototype throughout the summer, according to a statement.
Heman Bekele, a Virginia 9th grader, won first place in the challenge for his compound-based Skin Cancer Treating Soap.
