Box Truck Driver Killed In 2-Vehicle Crash On I-495 Thursday Morning

Police said the box truck crashed into the back of a truck that was stopped and waiting to exit the highway. The other driver was uninjured.

ANDOVER, MA — The driver of a box truck was killed in a two-vehicle crash Thursday morning on Interstate 495 in Andover, the Massachusetts State Police said.

The victim, an adult male, was transported to Lawrence General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead as a result of the injuries sustained in the crash, according to the MSP. The man's name, age and hometown have not yet been released pending the notification of the next of kin, authorities said.

A second driver involved in the crash, a 28-year-old Brockton man, who also was operating a commercial truck, appeared uninjured and refused medical attention at the scene, authorities said.

The MSP said it was called to the scene of the accident at 7:01 a.m. this morning.

According to a preliminary investigation conducted by the MSP-Andover Barracks and MSP specialized units, the crash involved two commercial vehicles: a waste services truck from Graham Waste Services of Brockton and the box truck.

Authorities said the waste services truck, which was carrying a dumpster, was in the right lane of I-495 southbound and stopped in a line of vehicles waiting to exit onto the ramp to Interstate 93.

The box truck approached the line of stopped traffic and hit the rear of the waste services truck, according to the MSP.

After the crash, the two right travel lanes at the crash site were closed for nearly an hour to accommodate the rescue response and investigation, the MSP said. The deceleration lane leading to the exit remained closed until 9:35 a.m., authorities said.

According to the MSP, the crash remains under investigation by Troop A of the MSP, the MSP Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the MSP Crime Services Section and the MSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section.
